“His paintings are usually made of many different media - oil, pencil, watercolors - and so include many different layers.
But they also seem dense: they often include a main portrait of a woman or a horse, but this is surrounded by a sea of marginalia. It’s as though the painting was itself very old and had a history. It has accumulated the detritus and comments of many ages, perhaps even of many hands. It’s a mystery which, as several collectors remind us, rewards many, many visits. These are paintings which can be constant companions.
